#TuesdayRunes – Hagalaz

Welcome to another segment of our journey through the Elder Futhark Script runes!

Today we take a detailed look into the rune, Hagalaz ((hah-gah-laz).

The runes are actually divided into three sections, with our symbol from last week completing the Freya Aett.

Our symbol this week begins the Hagal’s Aett and basically speaks to unavoidable experiences.

The keywords associated with this rune are: Destruction, chaos, interference, misfortune, or transformation.

While none of that sounds good, I can see a positive aspect from the perspectiive of transformation.

It is said that before change comes great chaos, and is that not true? So, while we don’t always like it, the end result is most always for the better. Think of the Butterfly. 🙂

This rune indicates that we cannot always control our circumstances. Even with all the technology we possess in modern times, Nature can step in at any moment with destructive forces that flatten cities and even countries.

The translation of this symbol is “Hail.” Hailstorms may be brief and localized compared to larger natural disasters, but the balls of ice that pelt the ground can often leave behind destruction, injuring people and animals and destroying entire crops. This certainly would have spelled disaster for any ancient community living off of the land.

Hagalaz signifies these forces of chaos that cannot be controlled. You simply cannot fix this interference. While this may be a frustrating time, know that your course is being corrected for reasons beyond your understanding. (Wow! How I love this. The most recent disaster we’ve all dealt with is COVID. So, we can hope that the course is being corrected and soon!)

If the reading surrounding this rune is generally positive, then the chaos may be on the lower of the spectrum – a temporary interruption. While if the runes close to Hagalaz are negative, then the trouble may be more severe or have longer lasting implications.

Please keep in mind this is NOT a reading. I will get into Rune readings once we finish examining each rune separately.

The birthdates associated with this rune are October 28th – November 13th.

    1. It is ironic, Debby. They are not intentional, so I think the Universe is speaking to you through them. You remain in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs!

  2. These runes are very interesting, Jan, and I never knew about them before your book. There are people [myself included] who believe that the pandemic and the lockdowns were necessary to change the course of human behaviour that was causing accelerated climate change. “It is always darkest before the dawn.”

    1. And, I tend to agree with you Robbie. I don’t believe anything just “happens.” There is always a reason. And as we move into the true Age of Aquarius, I think we will see even more changes necessary to lift the vibration of the planet. Thank you for stopping by! You are so right. It is always darkest before the dawn. Have a great day!

  3. Jan, humans are suckers for believing everything is within our control and do not like when proved wrong! A fascinating post and I trust the transformation after destruction will be a positive one, a brighter future. Ditto about Covid: ‘… we can hope that the course is being corrected and soon!’

    1. Hi, Annika. You are SO right about humans believing everything is within our control, even though the opposite is proven over and over again. 🙂 Thank you so much for stopping by. I am so glad you enjoyed the post!

  4. I like the idea of this being a temporary disruption rather than utter chaos. I’ve had a hard time looking at things in a positive way lately. Thanks for helping with that.

    1. There is always some positive aspect to any situation. I 100% believe that. It’s not always easy to see. I know it’s cliche, but when one door closes, another opens. I’ve found that to be true. Hang in there and look for the rainbow in the clouds, Staci! Thank you for stopping by!

  5. I know this is not a reading, but this one resonated hard with me today. I’m going through some disappointments and “transformations,” so reading this positive spin on it lifted my resolve a bit. Great post, Jan! 🙂

    1. Change is never easy in life. And yet it’s the one consistency we can count on. It’s almost an oxymoron. 🙂 I am glad the rune could help put a positive spin on your situation and give you the strength you need to persevere. Sending you all good vibes, light, and love, Yvette! Thank you for stopping by.

    1. I totally agree, Teagan. I’m always happier with calm, but I also get lazy when things go too good for too long. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! Hugs back!

  7. The transformation of a butterfly is a great example, Jan. I can also think of the incubation of any bird/chicken eggs. I observed the incubation of the chicken eggs in the classroom. The chicks had to struggle to break from the hatching of the eggs. There was one chick that had a hard time getting rid of the last piece of shell, one teacher “helped” the chick, but the skin was too tender after taking off that piece of shell. The chick didn’t survive. I was so shocked by that experience.

  8. The meaning of this rune is so close to real life. Yes, as you said, life happens. But the rune actually has the motivating message that out of uncontrollable happenings arises a newly developed attitude, personality, ability or insight. The transformation. Your example with the butterfly is great to explain it.

    1. It does depict real life, for sure, Erika. And without a little chaos, we don’t grow or transform into something more beautiful. Thank you for stopping by! Hugs!

The transformation part of the rune could be like the butterfly, just getting out of the cocoon is the hard part. I know when things are bleak good could be around the corner.

    1. So true, Denise. Behind every cloud is a rainbow. We never like the chaos part of growth, but it seems to be what shakes us out of our relaxed comfort zones. Thank you for stopping by!

  10. Fascinating, Jan. We humans rarely learn except through trials and challenges. I wish that weren’t the case, but I confess my greatest lessons arrived with the deepest tears. Thank you for explaining all this so eloquently.

    1. The same for me Gwen. When things are going smoothly, we don’t try to stretch and grow. I am learning, though, to maintain an attitude of gratitude for each facet of each day, and just that one perspective helps me maintain a balance through the trials and challenges. Thank you for stopping by! Hugs!

  11. I certainly hope that if Hagalaz is in ascendency at the moment, that it is now in its decline. A fascinating rune for sure. Thanks for sharing, Jan 🙂

    1. For sure, Harmony. I do hope your health is improving! Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. Have a great day!

  12. I can see where this one would be viewed in a negative light, but as you said, upheaval usually results in change. We don’t always like change but sometimes, after weathering a storm, we can focus on the cleansing that follows. Happy Tuesday, Jan!

    1. Exactly, Mae. We all want to stay in our nice little comfort zones, but if we do, we never grow. So, while change can be uncomfortable, in the end, it turns out for our higher good. Thank you for stopping by! Happy Tuesday to you, too!
