One of the most unique things about the stories Jan Sikes has published are the music CDs that accompany each segment of the story. Because the entire story of Rick and Jan Sikes’ lives evolve and revolve around music, it seemed to be the perfect accompaniment. The CD that accompanies “Flowers and Stone” is the Rick Sikes and the Rhythm Rebels Early Recordings.
These songs were all taken from 45 rpm records and digitally re-mastered. You will hear the smooth voice of Rick Sikes singing his country ballads and in contrast, his brother, Bobby Sikes (Track 10) takes you back to the birth of rockabilly. Den of Sin (Track 3) was a #1 hit in Denmark in 1964. Valley of Tears (Track 2) charted on the West Coast. This was a time when honky-tonk music ruled and this band was the hottest band in Texas during the 1960s and into the 1970s. Rick Sikes was convicted of bank robbery in 1971 and sentenced to seventy-five years in prison, thus halting this era of his music reign. But, it wasn’t the end…..

This is such a historic and unique collection of music. All the songs except for the title track were recorded in a makeshift recording studio behind the walls of Leavenworth Prison. Most of the vocals are sung by Thomas Jenkins, but all of the songs were written by Rick Sikes. He was the only one who knew how to run the mixing board, so he needed someone else to do the vocals. The title track, “Forty Foot High” was never recorded. Rick Sikes wrote it in 1976 and I discovered it after his death in 2009. Recording artist, Jamie Richards, graciously agreed to put music to the lyrics and record it for this CD.

“I’ll Be Home When The Roses Bloom Again,” accompanies “Home At Last.” The vocals on the title track is our amazingly talented daughter, Deva. You’ll also find songs on this CD that Jan wrote as well as some others written by Rick and Jan. Many of the songs on this record were recorded in our own studio in Coleman before Rick passed away. The title track was recorded at SG Studios in Fort Worth.

“Etchings In Stone” was the last CD Rick Sikes recorded. The story of how this CD came to be is chronicled in the book ‘Til Death Do Us Part, and was a true labor of love. Each song was recorded at Aardvark Brother’s Recording studio in Abilene, Texas and is an eclectic mixture of styles and lyrics. The title track was one that Rick was passionate about and enlisted the help of songwriter, John Beam to create the lyrics and melody. It tells a complete story.
