Welcome to another segment of our journey through the Elder Futhark script runes!
Today’s Runic Symbol is Isa (ee-sah).
The word, Isa, translates to ice. The keywords associated with the rune are: obstacles, standstill, stagnation, delay and coldness.
This is the exact opposite of our Tarot Reading yesterday, but remember this is not a reading. It’s simply a study of each rune from start to finish.
Isa is the third rune in the Hagal’s Aett, and the third in a row to carry a predominantly negative meaning.
As a representation of frozen water, Isa signifies a lack of movement, which is likely frustrating. There may be physical circumstances blocking our progress, a loss of energy, or mental blocks that you cannot see past in order to move forward.
It can also indicate a delay, and it is best to accept this as a reality in your current situation, instead of pushing against it. Know that the sun will eventually return to melt the block of ice and allow water to flow freely again.
In the meantime, take advantage of this still, static energy to practice focusing on the present moment. Meditation is highly useful now as it can help dissipate frustration and take your focus off of things you can’t control.
The main thing to remember when this rune shows up is that you don’t give up on your ambition or assume that a delay won’t work out. If there’s anything you can do to prepare for making progress once it becomes possible, put your energy there.
So, as always, there is a positive spin on what could be perceived as negative.
In the context of relationships, Isa can point to emotional coldness between people. Affection may be lacking and communication may have come to a standstill. I passionate romance may be cooling off.
One other aspect of this rune to note: The transparency of ice can also signify clarity. Evaluating your circumstances from a cool, emotionally detached viewpoint may prove helpful, which is another positive aspect of Isa.
The birthdays associated with Isa are November 28th – December 13th.

A most interesting rune and interpretation, Jan. I liked the last point about clarity. That can be incredibly helpful in making decisions.
Very true, Robbie! Thank you for stopping by!
Jan, a fascinating complex rune and I like it’s duality, the negative mixed with clarity, the pause giving time for reflection and positive steps forward. Thank you for sharing your excellent knowledge and making it accessible for us all! I’m hooked with this series and entering into a new world for me.
Thank you for stopping by, Annika, and I am thrilled that you are enjoying this study of the runes. It is fascinating how many signs and symbols are around us all the time and open to interpretation. Have a wonderful day and thanks again, for your comment!
Terrific Jan and fits the situation at the moment globally too as we all wait to find out how vaccinations are going to make a difference before we all pack our bags or pick up the threads of our lives…Also a little delay offers a chance to explore all options before making decisions… ♥♥
True enough, Sally, about the vaccine. It’s a wait-and-see game. I’m ready to pack my bags! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you, Jan, for sharing insight into what runes signify. I’m currently reading a Norse Historical Fantasy about a Valkarie, Brynhild, banished to the human world. She has the ability to conjure different alphabetic sounds in a magical song to influence nature. In one scene, she hears the “k-k” and “s-sh,” a tugging rune to help steer the hero, who is rowing in a boat away from her, back to the shore. It is fascinating how Brynhild uses runes in the story. It wasn’t until I read your novel, “Ghostly Interference,” that I became aware of the concept.
Wow, Linnea! The Norse Historical Fantasy sounds like an amazing read. The Norse used Runes as a way of communicating and I love that authors are bringing that forward in stories. Thank you so much for your kind words about “Ghostly Interference!” Thank you for stopping by and glad you are enjoying the study of the runes! Have a great day!
This covers my future DIL birthday and perfectly describes a situation she’s in right now. I’ll let her know that ice will be melting!
Excellent!! The ice always does melt eventually and things start to move again. 🙂 Thank you for stopping by!
You do put a positive spin on some of these less than fortuitous runes, Jan. Thank you
I do try, John. Thanks for stopping by!
It reminds me of the Hanged Man in the Tarot when even with a slightly different touch. So, this rune is basically representing concealment? Can it also mean to withdraw from something to receive clarity?
It could be comparable to The Hanged Man in Tarot, Erika. It is a time of delay but not necessarily concealment. The ice aspect of it indicates a new perspective or clarity about a situation. Very similar. Thank you for your comment! Hugs!
That’s awesome! I love the runes.

This should be my rune. I always think better when I can stand outside of the emotional aspect. Thanks, Jan.
While I don’t really know you, Jacquie, I can see where this would fit you. The no-nonsense, logical approach to problems is such a wonderful choice to make. Thank you for stopping by!
So opposite of yesterday. This is my husbands birthday ruin.
Total opposite from yesterday, but this is not a reading, just a study. I would guess that your husband is pretty clear in his words and actions. Thank you for leaving a comment.
He is:)
Reblogged this on GrannyMoon's Morning Feast.
Thank you, Granny Moon!
Jan, it’s always fun and informative to read your posts. I agree that sometimes it creates a moment of great clarity to look for the positive in a negative situation or feeling. Doing so may uncover a way of thinking that had eluded us. Thanks for putting the positive spin on this rune for us!
My pleasure, Maura Beth. I am really enjoying this journey through the runes, and look forward to doing some readings with them. Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment today. Hugs!
“The transparency of ice can also signify clarity.”
Love that thought! We can all use some of that when managing obstacles.
That was a profound statement to me too, Mae. And the first thing that came to my mind was how in a murder mystery, ice could play a huge role. 🙂 But I’ll pass that thought seed to you. Thank you so much for stopping by! Have a great day!
Oooh! That is indeed an intriguing seed, Jan. I’m tucking it away for future pondering 🙂
Have a great day!
Another fascinating post, Jan. I love your positive interpretation. 😊
Thank you so much, Gwen. I always look for the positive in every sign, symbol, and situation. I’m so glad you stopped by. Have a great day! Hugs!
I love how you give pointers of ways to process these moments, Jan.Even in moments of coldness, we get to choose how to react to them. Great post! 🙂
Always our choice, Yvette. In any given situation, we choose how we react and how we process. While we can’t control things that happen to and around us, we can control our responses. Thank you so much for stopping by. Sending hugs your way!
I like this rune, Jan. Thanks for the introduction!
Thank you, Jill. I appreciate you stopping by. Have a great day!
An interesting rune. And a great point about the clarity we often find in coolness. Thanks for sharing, Jan 🙂
I agree, Harmony. And being a double fire sign, I have a hard time finding any coolness. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
