Hanger’s Horsemen Series
By Karen Witemeyer
The Hanger’s Horsemen series was loosely inspired by a pair of television shows I watched as a teen and young adult back in the 1980s and 1990s. The A-Team inspired my team of four ex-military mercenaries and their determination to help the powerless fight against injustice. The Magnificent Seven inspired the western flair along with the drive to help those in need.
My Horsemen have names inspired by the four gospel writers. I didn’t want to be too predictable, however, so I gave one a twist: Mathew, Mark, Luke, and Jonah. Not too much was made of this in the books, since they frequently call each other by last names, rank, and nicknames, but sometimes I have fun including things just for my own personal enjoyment. This was one of those times.
Book 1 – At Love’s Command
Haunted by the horrors of war, ex-cavalry officer Matthew Hanger leads a band of mercenaries known as Hanger’s Horsemen who have become legends in 1890s Texas. They defend the innocent and obtain justice for the oppressed. But when a rustler’s bullet leaves one of them at death’s door, they’re the ones in need of saving.
Book 2 – The Heart’s Charge
When Horsemen Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks hear rumors of missing children, they partner with two ladies who run a local foundling home to investigate. As they work to uncover the truth, love and danger grow hand-in-hand until a final, sinister scheme threatens to destroy them all.
Book 3 – In Honor’s Defense
He came to stop a gang of rustlers and wound up tangled in a murder plot. The boy next door holds the key to the truth, but it’s the boy’s aunt who might end up holding the Horseman’s heart.

I’m a big fan of Karen’s work. I love all everything I’ve read of hers and right now, I have this book sitting on my Kindle just waiting for the time to read it. I promise myself it’ll be soon. No one writes better characters, especially heroes. I can’t say enough good things about her huge talent.
Oh, thank you for your wonderful recommendation, sister! If you say it’s well-written, then I know for sure it is. I will definitely be reading some of Karen’s work. I appreciate your comment!

The A-Team! I loved that show. I wouldn’t have thought of it as inspiration for the series, but I can see it now that it’s been pointed out. I loved In Honor’s Defense, and I’m going to catch up on the other two now. So very good!
Thanks for visiting, Lisa, and for leaving a comment!! I agree. I loved the A-Team and would have never thought of it as inspiration for a series, but inspiration can come from anywhere.
I have no problem admitting that I’m always first drawn to book covers, & then I look at the premises. This series is satisfying on both fronts. GORGEOUS covers! Thanks for sharing, Jan.
Kristine, if you haven’t read this, you should. Karen always writes wonderfully deep stories.
My pleasure, Kristine. I am totally with you on the book covers. That is the first thing I look at, then go from there and all of these are fabulous! Thank you for stopping by.
