Sam and James are dragged into another strange assignment when a couple of souls on The Eternal Road drop off the radar. Archangel Michael gives them specific orders to resolve the issue and get Billy Ray Chitwood, the national race car champion, and Dale Earnhardt, his guide, back on the task of finding Billy’s Eternal Home.

Finally, meeting up with Billy Ray and Dale, the foursome finds themselves in the future where World War III has devastated the country. The team discovers the cause of the start of the war and vows to mitigate that circumstance and save the world from devastation. They encounter their old nemesis, Lucifer, who has in mind trading preventing the war in exchange for Sam accepting his offer to be his queen.

Since Lucifer’s offer is a non-starter, Sam and James must overcome Lucifer’s interference and work to change the course of history, or humankind is doomed.

EXCERPT:

“Sadly, sir, you’re spot on.” The old man looks at the table.

“Okay, then we’ll need a wagon.”

“How much does it cost to hire a wagon?”

“We don’t need to hire one. I have one. Also, I think it will take something like three hours to get to your place. With the wagon and all, no need to rush once we get going. It’s getting on to 4:15, and we won’t have enough daylight to make it. You okay with staying at the hotel?”

The old man gives his stubble a scratch. “I don’t rightly have the cost of a room.”

“Don’t worry about that. We’ll get the city to pay for it. They owe me now.”

“Well then, I won’t say no.”

“Good. We’ll get you set up and then discuss when to leave.” Wyatt turns and looks toward the door. “Here comes the sheriff. He’ll give us a voucher for the room.”

The sheriff comes in fast and sure with a mission to accomplish. He strides up to Wyatt and says, “Wyatt Earp, you’re under arrest for murder.”

Wyatt’s eyebrows quiver. “Murder, you say? Who did I murder?”

“You know damn well you and your brothers and Doc Holliday gunned down the McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton.”

“I know no such thing, Johnny. Them boys was going to be arrested for stealin’ mules and instead started shooting. We shot back in self-defense.”

“I heard it differently. Don’t call me Johnny. It’s Sheriff Behan to you.”

“No matter what you heard, sheriff, I’ll not be put under arrest by you or anyone else. There’re witnesses to the fact those boys shot first. Besides, you were the one who told me they weren’t armed. That’s on you.”

“Yeah, okay, Wyatt. We’ll see how this turns out. I’ll leave you on your own recognizance.”

“You can leave me on anything you like, just so we’re clear. Don’t process any paperwork regarding an arrest. I don’t cotton much to false arrests if you get my drift.”

The sheriff says no more but gives Wyatt a stink eye as he turns and marches out of the saloon.

Wyatt looks down at the old man. “How about we get you settled into the hotel?”

The old man rises slowly. “I don’t suppose the sheriff will give that voucher you mentioned?”

“Now you let me worry about that. The important part is you get a good night’s sleep, and we get an early start tomorrow.” Wyatt excuses himself for a moment and goes over to talk to Virgil, Morgan, and Doc Holliday. He explains that he intends to take care of the old man and he’ll be right back. All three assure Wyatt they’ll be fine, so he returns.

The old man nods, and Wyatt walks with him out of the saloon, across the street, and into the Grand Hotel. Wyatt explains to the desk clerk that the old man is a guest of the city and that the sheriff should get the bill. The clerk doesn’t argue and asks the old man to sign in. The old man frowns and looks at Wyatt. “Here, let me sign him in under my name. That way the sheriff will know it’s legitimate. After looking at Wyatt’s signature, the clerk smiles and hands him a key. “Okay, old man, let’s you and I take a look at this here room.”
