Having read Flower Enigma, I knew I would enjoy catching up with the characters from that story, and I did.
JJ and Jo need a quiet getaway from their busy professional lives, and what better place than the small town of Magnolia Bluff, Texas? It is there they are able to keep Jo’s celebrity status a secret and get the anonymity they need to keep Jo safe from the paparazzi. So, they return to the Flower Bed and Breakfast, ready to relax and unwind.
I love the atmosphere of the small town and how the residents are so intertwined. Lily, who owns the Flower B&B, is also in charge of the gossip mill, and I had to laugh when the sheriff specifically asked her to start a rumor that he knew would spread like wildfire. Other characters I enjoyed revisiting were Hank and Ann and the two girls who were rescued from a horrible fate in the Flower Enigma story.
So, the quiet getaway starts off uneventful but picks up when JJ and Jo decide to purchase a piece of abandoned property to build a vacation home. It’s there they discover a dead body locked in a freezer and a strong box full of money buried under the freezer.
The authors did a good job of keeping the identity of the killer hidden as the characters attempt to solve the mystery surrounding not only the dead man in the freezer but the property itself. There are descriptive scenes that could only be written by someone who has experienced the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. I loved the scenes in the B&B where Lily serves up delicious food and keeps her nose in everyone’s business. She’s a delightful character. The residents of Magnolia Bluff love their little town and band together when troubles come to call. It is a true depiction of small-town living.
If you like small-town settings and are a fan of mystery, you will enjoy this story.
