So, I committed to participate in #NaNoWriMo.
Then life happened in a really big way. And my word count progress is pitiful. But, I am not giving up. Any word count is good, right?
So here’s a snippet from my WIP, “JAGGED FEATHERS”:
Nakina understood more about him than he knew. He was keeping something from her. Something big enough, that he would go to any lengths for it to remain hidden.
Her heart broke for the soldier who took on her fight without hesitation. He’d simply been trying to rebuild his own life and find some semblance of peace. Then she came along with her baggage and disrupted his entire world.
Truth be told, she was happy it was Vann Noble that found her that cold morning. Perhaps there was such a thing as fate or kismet. She couldnβt imagine that anyone else would have so willingly jumped in to rescue her. She swallowed past the lump in her throat. They had to somehow get out of this alive.
So far, my word count for the month is around 7,500, while according to NaNoWriMo, to reach my goal, I should be over 10,000. But, as I said, any progress is good progress. At least I’ve returned to the story after almost a year. π
I hope everyone participating in #NaNoWriMo is having less interruptions and more writing success!
Nothing at all wrong with 7,500, Jan. One of the challenges with Nano is that “life getting in the way” thing. I can relate and never sweat the word counts. Glory in writing and enjoy every moment. And great snippet by the way. π
Oh, thank you, Diana! I am happy you enjoyed the snippet. And you are absolutely right! There is nothing wrong with any word count!! Thanks so much for stopping by!
Happy Writing!
Sometimes the writing happens off-page. I sense a good story here; your snippet prompts questions: what kind of danger did Nakina face, who is the soldier and what kind of soldier is he, what does he hide, and why are he and Nakina fighting for their lives? It’s brewing, you’ll get it down. π
Those are EXACTLY the questions I wanted to raise in the reader!! Thank you for that feedback! And thank you for stopping by and leaving encouraging words!
I’m glad to do it, Jan. π
Well you have made better writing progress than me this month, Jan. I have been so busy at work and had all the promotional posts for my new book too. All progress is good in my opinion.
I couldn’t agree more, Robbie. Thanks for stopping by! Hugs!
Great job, Jan! Word count is only a number. The real value is the writing that is happening. Bravo!
Thank you, John! I agree!
Love the excerpt, Jan! Yay for 7500! Thats more than you had before you started. I’m stressing trying to keep up and make the goal. So, I decided everything I get is something i wouldn’t have done if I hadn’t joined. I hate not keeping up on my self imposed goals but life is happening here, too. I think its great we are trying something new and getting a story out of it…yay! Make the goal…maybe not but at least we did it:)
That is the attitude I have, Denise. I am happy to be working on the story and numbers are just that – numbers. At least NaNo got me back to the story! Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment!
Cheering you on, Jan! Every word counts … you got this! π
Thank you, Natalie. You are a great cheerleader!
Your snippet is intriguing, Jan. Yes any words are good words. Do what you can.
And that is exactly what I am going to do, John. Every day I add to the story is a good day! Thanks for stopping by!
π
I understand the stress. When I set goals I work hard to meet them. I also beat myself up when I donβt. I canβt do NaNo, because my opportunities are spread out. I do pretty good when given writing time, but that can be weeks apart. Not good for a process like NaNo.
You are so right, Craig. And I am realizing that NaNo probably isn’t the best thing for me to do, but hey, it at least got me back to working on the story! π Thanks for stopping by!
This stuff is part of our packaging, but we probably both ought to lighten up on ourselves. Weβve both had a pretty good year.
Good morning Jan- This sounds amazing. Do not give up and donβt fret about your word count, just write from your heart and enjoy your creation, one word at a time. Love you!
Thank you, dear Tonya! And don’t worry. I’m not giving up by a long shot. But, I am going to enjoy telling the story and quit worrying about word count!! π Love you!
Sounds like a great start to me! Loved the excerpt . . . don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time to reach your goal.
Thanks, Mark! I’m not worrying or stressing. It will be what it will be and rushing through a story will only cause massive rewrites later! π I appreciate your comment!
You got this, Jan. π
I agree with Annette…enjoy the process. It will be a masterpiece, whether or not you meet your current goals. π
Exactly, sweet Gwen. The Angel messages to me are exactly that. If it’s not enjoyable, I’m wasting my time!! Hugs, and thank you for your comment!
I’ve got as far as writing out half of a plot. By my counts, I’ll need to do about 4,000 words a day to catch up! At the moment my word count is minus everything.
Again, that’s okay! The only pressure we have is what we place on ourselves and if telling our stories causes stress, then we need to reevaluate! Thanks so much for your comment. Hang in there and pat yourself on the back for having half of a plot!! Way to go!
I am a random flailer, which strangely enough works for me.
So, why can’t this just be YOUR count? Cut yourself some slack and ENJOY the process. To me, achieving a goal is great but if you aren’t having fun, it is not worth it.
Exactly, Annette! The only pressure is what I put on myself and the Angel messages today are to relax and enjoy the process, or don’t do it!! π Love you, dear one! You inspire me constantly!
