Don’t miss out on this unforgettable odyssey that might just be a suicide trip.

“Reap the Wind is a bold, bracing and blisteringly original take on the legal thriller form. Joel Burcat has fashioned a seminal tale focusing on the nightmare of all road trips in which a storm raging outside the car is matched only by the storm raging within. Burcat dares to tread on the hallowed ground of John Grisham and Scott Turow and ends up blazing a fresh, daring literary tale of his own. Not to be missed!”

—Jon Land, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author

Review Lone Star

This story opens with a fast-paced jaw-dropping scene—A weather plane flying into one of the most intense hurricanes of this century with a seasoned crew. I held my breath as the events unfolded.

Then the author switches from that scenario to a group of lawyers meeting in Houston with high-powered potential clients in the oil and gas industry. We meet Josh, Geoff and Diane, who are all unforgettable and unique characters. Add the same horrendous hurricane coming ashore in the midst of their meeting and you have a recipe for disaster.

Josh is an environmentalist at heart, and he’s not satisfied with his job, but it’s good money and he has student loans he’s paying off. His fiance, Keisha, is there with him. She is eight months pregnant with their child, but neither of them has committed to marriage. These two characters drew me in immediately. What were they waiting for?

Then the story kicks into high gear when Keisha decides she needs to get home to Philadelphia before the storm gets worse. She catches one of the last flights out of the Houston airport. When she doesn’t make it to Philly, and as the storm intensifies, all flights are canceled. Josh is determined to get to Keisha before their baby is born. It’s then he, Geoff and their boss, Diane, venture on a road-trip none of them will ever forget (me either for that matter). The horrific weather is a huge issue and they have more than one narrow escape. There is a mixture of life-threatening events mixed with some humor along the way.

I felt that the big message in this story is about the seriousness of climate change. Are we doing enough? Are these storms only going to intensify as our planet warms? There is a lot of soul-searching going on with these clients and lots of decisions to be made.

It is a fast-paced story that kept me engaged and often on the edge of my seat. I wouldn’t want to start out on a road-trip in the middle of an enormous hurricane, but I rode along with these characters as they did. I highly recommend this story to anyone who is up for a nail-biting adventure with high-stakes drama. It is well-written and engaging with a surprise ending.

    1. I so relate to the ever-growing reading list, Mary. I will not live enough to ever read what is sitting on my Kindle. Of course, it doesn’t help that I keep adding more. 🙂 This book was such a good story! Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Given how we’re seeing the storms in Texas (and beyond) get more and more intense, I think this book seems really thought provoking. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jan. Great review.

    1. That is so true, Kristine. It was very realistic and this author has either lived through some of these storms or did a large amount of research. Thank you for stopping by!
