#TarotTuesday – Five of Cups

Welcome to another Tarot Tuesday!

If you are just joining me, let me explain the inspiration to begin these posts. In Texas, and all across the country, Taco Tuesday is a popular day when Tacos are usually 99 cents. So, I had the inspiration, or Angel nudge as I like to think of it, to create a Tarot Tuesday. Each Tuesday I will post a different Tarot card and give its meaning. I pray and ask for the right card that will bring a universal message.

I created a short video to demonstrate how I pull the card for the posts. If you’re interested, here’s aΒ LINK.

Today’s card is the FIVE of CUPS!

The keywords associated with this card are: Regret, failure, disappointment, and pessimism.

Hmmm, not a feel-good positive card. So, let’s see how we can turn that around.

The Five of Cups shows a man in a long black cloak looking down on three cups that have been knocked over – symbolic of his disappointments and failures. Behind him stand two cups representing new opportunities and potential, but because he is so fixed on the over-turned cups, he’s not seeing the opportunities available to him.

In the background, a bridge crosses a large, flowing river and leads to the security of the castle or home on the opposite side of the riverbank – if only he can move on from the over-turned cups. The bridge is a message to ‘build a bridge and get over it!’

The Five of Cups often appears in a Tarot reading when a situation hasn’t turned out the way you expected, and you are sad, regretful, and disappointed. It’s time to get over it! Sure, feel the feels, but set yourself a time limit for your self-pity and then pull yourself together and move on.

The Five of Cups suggests you’re stuck in the past and can’t let go. Old wounds and bitter memories flood your mind as you think about what happened. You may blame yourself or believe you’re a victim of life’s circumstances. These negative emotions are holding you back from your fullest potential – release them so you can move on and create positive change.

Forgiveness is vital with the Five of Cups, both of yourself and others. If someone has disappointed you, find it within your heart to forgive that person, releasing yourself from the disappointment. And if you are frustrated with yourself, know that you did the best you could under the circumstances and have now learned from your mistakes.

The Five of Cups shows you that, even though things aren’t going your way, new opportunities and possibilities are waiting for you – but only when you are ready. It’s time to shift your mindset and focus on what can go right from this point onward. Be open to the brighter side of life and know many blessings are in disguise right now. Instead of giving in to a β€˜glass is half empty’ perspective, look at it as the β€˜glass is half full’.

In thinking about how this card applies to my life, I take it as a reminder that everything is always changing. The most valuable lesson here is to constantly be aware and open to new opportunities and possibilities awaiting! How about you? Does this card carry a personal message for you?

Thank you for joining me! See you next Tuesday for another inspiring message from the Universe via the Tarot Cards!

As always, I use the Rider-Waite Radiance deck and BiddyTarot.com for interpretations.

  1. From one deck to the next, the Cups suit seems to have the most beautiful illustrations. I’ve been having a hard time seeing anything at all in the glass. Here’s to it being half full. Hugs on the wing!

    1. I totally agree about the Cups suit, Teagan. The artwork can be stunning! Keep looking! There’s something in that glass, whether or not it’s half full! Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment! Hugs back!

  2. Fives are tough cards, all that chaos. I like your message though about not getting stuck and lifting our eyes to the opportunities ahead. These are fun, Jan. Thanks!

    1. You are so right about fives, Diana. I try to find the positive spin on each card and amazingly enough, there always is one! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. This card absolutely speaks to me this week. Someone important to me really disappointed me this week, and I’m totally in the β€œfeel it” mode. I will slowly work myself to forgiveness and β€œget over it” but I’m just not there yet. Lol!

    1. I completely understand, Yvette. And this card is backing that up completely. Go ahead and “feel” the emotions, then let them go and move forward. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment! Hugs!

  4. Hi, Jan! This card is intense. I’ve never been one to dwell in the past or hold grudges. I prefer to move on. This reminds me of a quote: β€œHolding on to resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.β€πŸ˜˜

    1. Oh my goodness, Vashti, that is an awesome quote! And it is true. We only harm ourselves by holding onto our mistakes from the past. We learn. We move on! Thanks so much for stopping by!

      1. I love that quote because I know it to be 100% true. I’m glad you liked it, too. It’s always a pleasure stopping by, my friend. πŸ˜€ xo

  5. When I saw the card I thought that this time, it is not talking to me. But then I read the part where you were talking about holding on to the past, regrets, disappointments. And I had to confess that this may fit. Lately, I thought back on how impatient I was with my children and I regretted it (again) to the bottom of my heart. Then I read on and I realized that the card can also be a hint that those three empty cups have to be emptied to finally let go and they are meant to be filled again with new beautiful memories of which there are so many. On a side note, I have three children… A wonderful card, eventually.

    1. That’s a great example of synchronicity, Erika! The fact that you have three children is symbolic. It’s time to forgive yourself, stand those cups back up and move forward!! Thanks for leaving a comment!

      1. Thanks for saying that. It is very moving to get that kick in the butt to finally allow yourself to let go of the old feelings of guilt. Funny how a card can turn from not relating to completely identifying with it… lol
Thank you so much for your weekly card readings, Jan πŸ’–

I may have been guilty of not letting some things go. I am on a mission to move forward with the lessons learned. I think society is on the same path. Here’s to a bright future filled with hope.

    1. We can never move forward until we stop looking back, so letting go and forgiving is the first step in that process. I sincerely hope that society is on the same path! Thanks so much for stopping by, Denise!

  7. I’ve focused on those last couple of paragraphs… blessings in disguise and awaiting new opportunities. That’s how I feel this card applies to me, my life. I might even be a little fond of this card. πŸ–€ Thanks so much for sharing, Jan!!

    1. It’s interesting, Mar, but as I was working through the card meaning, that part of it was what really jumped out at me too! Thanks for stopping by, and I agree, I just might be a little fond of this card too! Hugs!

  8. Jan, this is so accurate for me! Yesterday, I figured out the ending to my story wasn’t working… so it was time to leave that behind and cross the bridge to a new and better one. Excellent card! Of course I’m disappointed and frustrated but yet hopeful. πŸ™‚ I love it. Thank you for all your help and support. Love you, sister.

  9. This is a lesson a lot of people forget. If we hold onto past failures, or wrongs that others have done to us, we end up making ourselves miserable. Not for me! I’m all about for getting over it and moving on. Great post, Jan!

    1. That is a GREAT attitude to have, Mae! Of course, we fail at things, but if we wallow in those failures, we only succeed in making ourselves and everyone around is miserable! I agree with you. Onward and upward! Thank you!

  10. Happy Tuesday, Jan! I love your explanation of this card. πŸ™‚ I often say “If we anchor ourselves to yesterday, we are bound to miss the beauty that lies before us…” It’s an understanding that took me years to fully embrace. Now, it’s a liberating motto to live by. Thanks so much for sharing. Cheers, my friend! πŸ™‚

    1. What a beautiful motto, Natalie! It is so true. As long as we are looking backward, we cannot move forward and life is all about forward movement! Thank you for stopping by and for your comment!

  12. Good morning Jan- I’m going to move on and look at the possibilities ahead, like you said, we can all turn a negative into a positive. It’s truly a state of mind.
I take Rob back to Wichita today so he can have a CT Scan and see his doctor for a followup in the morning, so I’m keeping a positive thought process going for his pathology results to be great news.
    Love you Sweet Lady.

    1. There you go, Tonya! Look at the two cups still standing and in your situation, Rob is still alive and has the possibility of a good prognosis! Love you too, my dear, and continue to lift you both up in my prayers!
