Every time I read a Sci-Fi book, I find myself thinking, “What if?” This debut novel from Swanson is no exception. What if there was a planet on the verge of extinction and they desperately needed humans from earth to save them?
The Shattered Gate opens in the year 2054 where we see a man named Graham captured in a terrifying space abduction. He’d been watching a ball game with some of his buddies when huge spaceships invaded and snatched up 144,000 humans. I wondered if the author coincided that number with the prophecy in the book of Revelations in the Bible. If so, he never referenced it in the story.
The story then switches to the planet Ceres, two hundred years later, where we learn that the Cerans had been threatened with extinction from radiation. That was before they abducted humans, desperate for their genetics to provide the lifeblood they needed to keep their planet’s population alive.
As the story unfolds, Micah Trace has a strong physical reaction to any mention of planet Earth. It is at this point, I began to suspect he is directly tied to the abducted humans from 2054. Through studies and exploration, The Cerans learn that humans on Earth are in trouble and must unite to survive. Now, the question is whether or not humans will accept help from the Cerans.
Swanson did a good job of creating the world of Ceres, from its government down to regular citizens. His descriptions of the humans, hybrids, the extremely advanced AI, and the royals give the reader a clear picture of what part each plays in their society. The writing could have been tighter which would have made for a shorter more focused book. But readers who love stories set on a planet with advanced technology and clear societal roles will enjoy this book, especially as it includes possibly saving Earth from destruction.

Great review, Jan. These sound like intriguing sci-fi novels. Interesting that Eric chose 144,000 as the number for those abducted. I would have made the same correlation you did.

I watch a lot more sci-fi than I read because the books can be sprawling. But this sounds like an interesting premise. Wishing him much luck with his series. Thanks, Jan.
That’s an interesting observation, Staci. I can see where watching sci-fi might be more entertaining than reading because of all the amazing special effects. Thank you for stopping by!

You are so right, Priscilla. 2054 is just around the corner. I don’t think I will still be alive. That would make me over one hundred. 🙂 Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment!
