Two sisters are ostracized and terrorized by the good citizens of San Antonio, Texas, for one reason and one reason only. Their father is the hangman.
As long as the sisters are helping care for the ill and dying from Yellow Fever, they let them stay. But as soon as they no longer need their help, they burn their house, attack one sister, and chop off her hair, then run them both out of town.
Only, the sisters aren’t alone. A group of orphans no one wants is left in their care. Where to go?
The strength these two young women show is remarkable. While someone weaker would buckle, they stand straight and tall and vow to protect the unwanted children at all costs.
Maura comes up with a plan and goes in search of an uncle rumored to live in an abandoned Spanish mission. Surely, Uncle Max will help, that is, if he can stay sober long enough.
The hardships these sisters face as they try to establish a home for themselves and the orphans in this riveting story are more than anyone should have to withstand. Yet they do. There is nothing more heartbreaking than children who no one wants. But Maura and Emma give them all the love and care they have. They will thrive!
Then when a stranger needs their help, they don’t hesitate. But is the man who he appears to be, or is he a wanted outlaw? You’ll have to read the story to find out! Broday has crafted another compelling story realistically set in the 1800s with a strong heroine and dangerously handsome hero. Her descriptive writing kept me engaged inside the story with the characters. I rooted for them all the way. I highly recommend this book with 5 big stars!

Winning Maura’s Heart sounds like a “winning” read. Good review, Jan!
I agree, Priscilla! Thanks for visiting.
Thank you so much for this heartfelt review, Jan. I really loved telling the story of these sisters and the men who take a chance on them. Calhoun was such an incredible, swoon-worthy hero. As tortured heroes go, he was at the top of the list. Love you, sister.
Thanks for sharing your sister’s book Jan. It sounds awesome! Wishing her all the best.

Congrats to your sis on the new book, Jan. It sounds great and your review was awesome. The kids are a great hook and seem to add a touching thread to the story, but what I really want to know is which brother is in Maura’s care! Great review. 🙂
Right? Well, you’d have to read the book to find out. 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment, Diana! Hugs!
🙂
Good luck to Linda on the release. Great review.
Thank you, Michele! I appreciate you stopping by!
This sounds really intriguing, Jan, and it’s nice to see books now and then that offer something “clean and wholesome.” It isn’t that I don’t read some that aren’t, but rather that it’s nice to have a choice, and sometimes clean and wholesome is exactly what I’m looking for. I’ll be checking this one out, and here’s wishing Linda huge success with this one! Thanks for sharing. ?❤️
I totally understand, Marcia, and I feel the same. There is plenty of suspense and mystery in this story, and it kept me turning the pages. Thank you for stopping by to help support Linda’s new release!
Wonderful review. Wishing Linda all the best with this release.
Thank you, Staci!
All the best to Linda.
Thank you, Craig!
I’ll definitely add this one to my reading list, Jan. It sounds great! Thanks for sharing.
My sister can write such heartfelt stories and this one is so good. It’s hard to imagine being ostracized because of your father’s profession, but it still happens even today. Thanks for stopping by, Jill!
