- Does Magnolia Bluff hold the answers to their prayers?
- Will their desires get clouded by a hidden secret?
Past, present, and future collide in a perfect storm no one expected. JJ and Jo take action to uncover the truth. Chief Tommy Jager likes them, but he feels they’re a lightning rod for trouble and disruption.
Who will live or die to prevent the truth from being exposed? The answers may be in the graveyard with the fresh flowers on the gravestone.

Having read Flower Enigma, I knew I would enjoy catching up with the characters from that story, and I did.
JJ and Jo need a quiet getaway from their busy professional lives, and what better place than the small town of Magnolia Bluff, Texas? It is there they are able to keep Jo’s celebrity status a secret and get the anonymity they need to keep Jo safe from the paparazzi. So, they return to the Flower Bed and Breakfast, ready to relax and unwind.
I love the atmosphere of the small town and how the residents are so intertwined. Lily, who owns the Flower B&B, is also in charge of the gossip mill, and I had to laugh when the sheriff specifically asked her to start a rumor that he knew would spread like wildfire. Other characters I enjoyed revisiting were Hank and Ann and the two girls who were rescued from a horrible fate in the Flower Enigma story.
So, the quiet getaway starts off uneventful but picks up when JJ and Jo decide to purchase a piece of abandoned property to build a vacation home. It’s there they discover a dead body locked in a freezer and a strong box full of money buried under the freezer.
The authors did a good job of keeping the identity of the killer hidden as the characters attempt to solve the mystery surrounding not only the dead man in the freezer but the property itself. There are descriptive scenes that could only be written by someone who has experienced the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. I loved the scenes in the B&B where Lily serves up delicious food and keeps her nose in everyone’s business. She’s a delightful character. The residents of Magnolia Bluff love their little town and band together when troubles come to call. It is a true depiction of small-town living.
If you like small-town settings and are a fan of mystery, you will enjoy this story.

Sounds like a fun series:) Thanks for sharing it with us! Xo
I’ve read a number of Breakfield and Burkey’s books. Their voice is consistent in each one. The characters are solid and multi-dimensional. Jo and JJ are down-to-earth people you’d want as your neighbors. The insertion of the high-tech plot is unique.
Good review of The Killer Enigma. In many ways, I think it is better than The Flower Enigma. Both books have high entertainment value, and what’s not to like about that?
Love the review, Jan. I love how you Texas folks share the marketing load.
Marvelous review, Jan. Thanks for sharing with us. Hugs.
My pleasure, Teagan. Thank you for stopping by!
Teagan thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Thank you for the review of another book that sparked my interest.
Thank you, Karen!
Karen, glad your interest got sparked. And of course Jan would never steer you wrong with her reviews!
As good an the Enigma Flower, this book may be even better. Certainly a body in the freezer ups the stakes a bit. Excellent continuation where we learn (and love) more about Jo and JJ. I’m glad they decided to come back to Magnolia Bluff for a second visit. If you read the Enigma Flower, I’m sure you will continue with this “Enigma.” And if you haven’t read it, grab both books now. You won’t regret it.
Don’t know why it came in as Anonymous, but nonetheless the books are a must read. Jim
Thanks for stopping by anonymous Jim and great comments.
Thank you, Jim, for your added recommendation for this book! I agree about grabbing both books!
Terrific review! I love the fact that Breakfield and Burkey bring a high tech element into the small town of Magnolia Bluff. A solid mystery weaved with a sweet love story makes The Killer Enigma a great addition to this wonderful series!
Thank you for stopping by and adding your recommendation, Joe!
Joe, it is always good to hear from you and we like your support.
Jan, thanks for hosting out portion of the blog tour and the kind review.
Charles Breakfield
My pleasure, Charles!
Great Review! I have often said that Breakfield and Burkey are, in addition to being excellent writers, purveyors of ideas. These two “Enigma” books provide a vision of both the light and the dark of the Magnolia Bluff Crime Chronicles. Their main Characters are attractive, both in appearance and action. It is quite fun to place them amidst the various personalities and eccentricities of Magnolia Bluff. Highly recommended!
Richard, thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Mary, thanks for commenting on the blog tour. While it is an intriguing collection it is also an enigmatic series.
Thank you, Mary! Happy you stopped by!
Love the premise of this one. Nothing like a body in your freezer to make your vacation home feel cozy! Thanks for sharing your review. I really need to binge-read this series.
We believe you will enjoy the fact that while all the books share the same local and has many shared characters, each book is written as a stand alone. No cliff hangers to irritate a reader.
Thank you for stopping by. I agree. Nothing like finding a body in a freezer to put a damper on your quiet vacation. 🙂
What a cool idea for a collection of related novels. Thanks for sharing, Jan!
Priscilla, a shared town setting, shared characters, and lots of crime/mystery stories. What’s not to like? Enjoy.

Jill, glad you could stop by and comment. Many thanks.
Has a similar vibe to the Harbor Pointe Series.
That’s true, Craig. All of the stories are set in the small town of Magnolia Bluff. Thank you for stopping by and sharing.
Craig, glad you could stop by and comment. While Magnolia Bluff is not close to an ocean, we do have a good size reservoir near the town that plays in many of the books. Hope you get a chance to read and compare them.
